Door-to-Door Sales Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)
The questions door-to-door sales managers ask in interviews, what they are really checking, and strong answers for reps with and without experience.
Short answer: door-to-door interviews are short and are mostly checking one thing: will you still be here in week three? Every question below is a version of that. Answer with specifics about your schedule, your reasons and what you have already pushed through, and you will get the offer.
The questions
"Why door-to-door sales?"
They want a reason that survives a bad day. Money is fine, but say what the money is for. Growth is fine, but say what you want to grow into. Avoid "I'm a people person."
"What will you do when someone slams the door in your face?"
Say what you will literally do: shake it off, walk to the next door, and remember it is a numbers game. If you have a story of doing something hard repeatedly, tell it.
"Can you work six days a week? Can you be in [market] from May to August?"
Answer exactly. If you have a wedding in July, say so now. Managers respect honesty about dates and resent surprises.
"Have you sold anything before?"
If yes, give numbers. If no, give the closest thing: upselling at a restaurant, fundraising, recruiting people to a team, persuading a customer at a retail counter.
"What do you think a day looks like?"
They are checking whether you have read anything. Read our industry pages and describe the day: morning meeting, hours in the territory, a target for doors and conversations, follow-ups at night.
"Where do you want to be in a year?"
Team lead, closer, a different industry, your own crew. Any clear answer works. "I don't know" does not.
Questions you should ask them
- How and when does pay release, and is there a draw?
- What did a middle-of-the-pack rep on this team earn last year?
- How is territory assigned?
- What does training look like in the first two weeks?
- What is the path to the next role?
Companies that answer these clearly are the ones worth working for. We ask every company the same questions before we introduce you to it.
Questions
How long is a door-to-door sales interview?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes by phone or video, sometimes followed by a ride-along day with the team.
What should I wear to a door-to-door sales interview?
Clean, neat, and close to what reps wear on the doors: a polo or button-down and clean shoes. For video interviews, the same from the waist up.
