Alarm and home security sales license requirements by state

Which states license or register the person who sells alarm systems at the door, what each one requires, and where no state license applies. With sources.

Short answer: many states regulate the individual who sells alarm systems in a customer's home, separately from the alarm company. The credential goes by different names: alarm agent, registered employee, salesperson license, sales representative registration. Most require a background check, and the rep must work for a licensed company that sponsors the application. Texas is the notable exception: it stopped licensing alarm salespeople in 2019. The table lists 12 states where we read the rule on an official source.

How to read this page

A state is listed only when we read the rule on the legislature's or the agency's own page; each row links to it. A state that is missing was not checked or could not be confirmed, which is different from having no rule. Laws change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the company and the agency before you sell. Sources were last read on November 6, 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

What the states have in common

States not in the table

For New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Arkansas and Louisiana we found employee registration or licensing rules for alarm businesses, but the official pages did not say clearly whether a person who only sells is covered. Tennessee and Illinois pages would not open. They stay off the table until we can read a clear statement. The home security sales FAQ covers contracts, takeovers and pay.

Questions

Can I start selling alarms before my state registration is approved?

It depends on the state. Arizona allows it only under the direct supervision of a certified alarm agent or with a temporary certification. North Carolina allows a probationary period of 20 consecutive days. Virginia allows up to 90 days while the required training is completed. Ask the company which rule applies and get the answer before you travel.

Who applies for an alarm sales license, the rep or the company?

Usually the company, or the rep through the company. Alabama requires the individual to work for a licensed company and hold the license through it; North Carolina and South Carolina put the duty to register employees on the licensee; Florida makes the contractor responsible for the agent's training and identification card.

Do I need a state license to sell home security in Texas?

Not an individual one. The Texas Department of Public Safety stopped licensing alarm salespeople on September 1, 2019. The alarm company is still licensed, and cities can still require a solicitor permit.
