What is slamming in energy sales?
Slamming: Slamming is switching a customer's electricity, gas or phone provider without their clear permission. It is illegal, and a rep who does it can face penalties along with the company.
In states with retail energy choice, a customer can pick a supplier, and door-to-door reps sell those plans. Slamming happens when a rep enrolls someone who did not agree, for example by presenting the enrollment as a rate check or by signing for them.
State utility regulators investigate these complaints and can fine suppliers and bar sales agents. The safeguards are simple: say which company you represent and that you are not the utility, explain that the customer is choosing a new supplier, and let the customer complete their own verification.
