Fiber sales FAQ: how door-to-door fiber internet sales works

Short answer: Fiber sales means signing up households for internet service on a fiber-optic network, usually door to door in neighborhoods where a provider has just finished building. The pitch is short, most sales close in one visit, and the rep is paid when the service is installed. It is one of the fastest-paying door-to-door industries, and it runs year-round.

The job

What is fiber sales?

Fiber sales is selling home internet service that runs over fiber-optic cable. Reps work the streets a provider has recently connected, explain the service, take the order on a tablet and book the installation. Most of the work is door to door because a new network needs customers quickly.

What does a fiber sales rep actually sell?

An internet subscription at a chosen speed tier, together with the installation appointment. Depending on the provider, the order can add Wi-Fi equipment, TV or streaming, home phone or mobile lines. The rep does not sell the construction: the network is already in the street.

Who do fiber sales reps work for?

Either the internet provider itself or, more often, an authorized dealer or sales agency the provider contracts to sell for it. Ask which company signs your agreement, which provider you would represent, and who pays your commission.

How do I get into fiber sales with no experience?

Apply to a team working an active build, expect a few days of product training, and start on the doors with a lead. Fiber is one of the easier industries to enter because the pitch is short and households already buy internet. You need reliability, a phone and transportation.

Where are fiber sales jobs?

Wherever fiber was just built or is being built, so the map changes with construction. Local teams work a metro area for months or years; blitz teams travel to a new neighborhood for days or weeks. Ask how many unsold addresses the team has ahead of it.

The product

How does fiber internet differ from cable?

Fiber carries data as light through glass strands all the way to the home. Cable internet uses the coaxial lines that were built for television. In practice fiber can deliver upload speeds as fast as its download speeds, while cable plans have usually uploaded far slower than they download. Describe your provider's actual plans, not fiber in general.

How can reps explain symmetrical internet speeds?

Say that upload is as fast as download, then tie it to something the household does: video calls, sending large files, cloud backups, security cameras, gaming. Keep it honest. Speeds are "up to" a figure, and the Wi-Fi inside the house, not the fiber line, is often what limits a device.

What speed counts as broadband?

Since March 2024 the Federal Communications Commission has used 100 megabits per second download and 20 megabits per second upload as its benchmark for broadband. It is a useful reference when a homeowner asks whether their current plan is fast.

What is a broadband label, and do reps need to show it?

It is a standard fact sheet, modeled on a nutrition label, that lists a plan's price, fees, speeds and data allowance. The Federal Communications Commission has required providers to display it at every point of sale since 2024. Use the version and the process your provider gives you, and never quote a price that differs from it.

Why can I sell to one house and not the house next door?

Because only addresses the network has actually reached can be installed. Providers give reps a list or map of these serviceable addresses. An order outside it cannot be installed and will not pay.

How do I answer a homeowner who is happy with cable or 5G home internet?

Ask what they use the internet for and what they pay, then compare honestly. Fiber's case is a dedicated wired line with fast uploads and consistent speeds; wireless home internet depends on signal and network load. If their current service fits them, say so and leave your contact details.

Pay and installs

How do installation appointments affect commissions?

Commission is earned when the service is installed, not when the customer signs. A missed appointment, a customer who changes their mind, or an install the technician cannot complete all mean no pay for that order. Book the earliest slot the customer can keep, confirm it the day before, and stay reachable.

What bonuses do fiber sales reps earn?

Common ones are weekly bonuses for a number of completed installs, higher rates at higher volume, and extra pay for add-ons such as TV or mobile lines. Bonuses are usually counted on installs, not signed orders, so ask which week a late install counts toward.

Do fiber sales have chargebacks?

Yes. If a customer disconnects or stops paying within a window the provider sets, the commission can be taken back. The window differs by company. Sell the plan the household needs and explain the regular price after any promotion, and chargebacks stay low.

Rules

Can fiber reps sell in apartment buildings?

Only with the property's permission. Apartment and condo buildings are private property, the building has to be wired, and many providers give them to a separate team. Do not knock inside a building just because the houses around it are on your list.

What must a fiber sales rep never say?

Do not claim to be from the homeowner's current provider or the utility, say their existing service is being shut off, or quote a price that leaves out fees or the rate after the promotion. Do not switch anyone's service without clear consent. These are the complaints that end dealer contracts.

Can reps still offer the Affordable Connectivity Program discount?

No. The federal Affordable Connectivity Program ended on June 1, 2024, when its funding ran out. Some providers have their own low-income plans. Describe only what your provider currently offers in writing.

Do fiber sales reps need a permit?

Usually the only credential is a city solicitor permit, in cities that require one. Your company should file it before you knock, and you should carry it with your company ID.
