What is the Cooling-Off Rule in door-to-door sales?
Cooling-Off Rule: The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives a customer three business days to cancel most door-to-door sales of 25 dollars or more made at their home, for a full refund. The seller must tell them so in writing.
The rule is federal and applies in every state. At the time of sale the rep must tell the customer about the right to cancel and hand over two copies of a cancellation form with a dated contract or receipt. Saturday counts as a business day; Sundays and federal holidays do not.
Many states add their own home solicitation laws, and some give longer periods for certain products or customers. For a rep this is routine paperwork: explain the right clearly and leave the forms. A customer who knows they can cancel is more comfortable deciding, and a skipped notice can undo the sale.
