What is a non-compete in a door-to-door sales contract?
Non-compete: A non-compete is a clause that limits working for a competing company for a period after you leave. Many rep agreements also include a non-solicit, which bars recruiting former teammates or customers.
Summer sales companies use these clauses because reps and whole teams move between companies each season. A non-compete names what you may not do, for how long and where. A non-solicit is narrower: you may work elsewhere but may not take reps or customers with you.
Whether a non-compete can be enforced depends on state law, and states differ widely; some refuse to enforce most of them. If a clause would stop you from working in the industry next season, have a lawyer in your state read it before you sign. This is general information, not legal advice.
